History of Hampton Court

Hampton Court Palace is a well-known palace in England in the borough of Richmond upon Thames.  The building was started by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey but was later given to King Henry VIII. Henry VIII then began his own rebuilding and expansion of the palace. Edward VI was born at the palace and his mother, Jane Seymour, died there two weeks later. When Henry died, his daughter Mary chose Hampton Court as the place awaiting the birth of her first child, which turned out to be a phantom pregnancy. Elizabeth I succeeded Mary and she built the eastern kitchen and the palaces’ public tea room. The maze is one of the iconic features of the palace. It was thought to be created at the end of the 17^th century and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions! The gatehouse to the inner court was built in 1540 with the astronomical clock. It shows the time of day, phases of moon, the month, the quarter of the year, the date, the sun and star sign.

Fountain Court is overlooked by the beautiful red brick buildings, designed by Christopher Wren and has a large pool and fountain. For a more intimate occasion, Fountain Court is perfect for dinner dances and drinks receptions. It can hold 1,200 guests for drinks, 600 for dinner and 360 for dinner dances. Hampton Court has many rooms inside that are perfect for any occasion. The King’s Eating Room is ideal for drinks receptions and dinners. It has stunning views and is decorated lavishly. It can hold 60 for reception, 40 for dinner and 24 for reception and dinner. The Cartoon gallery is great for larger receptions and can hold 300 for a reception and 200 for dinner. It is a long oak-panelled room and is decorated by cartoons (working drawings). The Garden Room has a capacity of 300 for a reception, 220 for dinner and dancing and 250 theatre style. This space is also available in the day time and is equipped with AV facilities and Wi-Fi. Marquees can also be raised within the grounds – there is plenty of outside space to support a large number of people. The gardens run down to the River Thames and feature beautiful fountains. Public Transport to Hampton Court

You can access Hampton Court by the Hampton Court railway station which runs half-hourly and is only a short walk from the palace. From central London, it is 35 minutes from London Waterloo Station and in zone 6. You can also arrive by car and parking is available within the grounds with 200 spaces. Alternatively, you can catch a bus from Kingston and Richmond. In the summer, riverboats run from Westminster, Richmond-upon-Thames and Kingston-upon-Thames.
