History of Lancaster House

Commissioned by the Duke of York in 1825, Lancaster House, initially known as York House, offers a prestigious central location close to Buckingham Palace.

Lancaster House was designed by Sir Robert Smirke, later replaced by Benjamin Dean Wyatt, and was a political hub in the nineteenth century.

It was constructed from Bath stone in a neo-classical style, being the last London mansion to use this style. Lancaster house is a Grade 1 listed building and has been magnificently preserved, offering first-class facilities for any occasion.

Managed by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, it has a rich political history and has been used extensively as a filming location for several film and television series including Downton Abbey, The Kings Speech and The Crown.

Lancaster House is a unique venue that can be used for a variety of events, from business to hospitality.

The house features an impressive grand hall and sweeping staircase that will certainly create a memorable entrance!

The long gallery, filled with natural light from 18 windows and skylight, can hold up to 150 people for a seated dinner and is the ideal room for receptions for up to 350 people. This room was used by Winston Churchill for a coronation banquet for Queen Elisabeth II.

Additionally, the state drawing room can accommodate 40 people at a boardroom table, 34 for a dinner or 120 for a reception.

The music room has a status of being one of the most elegant spaces in the city and was used by Frederic Chopin in 1848 who played here for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Nowadays, the room provides a grand setting for meetings or formal dinners.

Each room is lavishly decorated in a Louis XIV style, reflecting its history and demonstrating its glamour and sophistication.

Located in the St James’ district of London, it is close to Buckingham Palace, a short stroll away down the Mall to the Leicester Square and within walking distance to Victoria Station.
