History of Gibson Hall

The history of Gibson Hall is one of interest and importance. It first started out as the home to the National Provincial Bank of England. In 1862, the Directors of the NPBE decided to rebuild their head office in Bishopsgate.

Spearheading the redesign was none other than John Gibson, a former assistant to Sir Charles Barry who built the Houses of Parliament. The redesigned building opened in 1865 and was instantly the largest banking hall in London.

Gibson Hall is seen as a fine example of Victorian neo-classical architecture and was granted Grade 1 status in 1950 because of it. In the 1990’s, the hall has been available to hire exclusively for private and corporate events and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Most consider this to be John Gibson’s finest work; so much so that the building was renamed after him in the 90’s to commemorate a wonderful architect.
